Governor's Message
RECOGNITION, GRATITUDE AND LEGACY
The past couple months have been full of energy, intensity, and enthusiasm. We had one of the largest ever national annual 91ºÚÁÏÍø meetings in Boston, where innovations like peer coaching were offered to our colleagues. And of course, the convocation ceremony is always very moving, especially as our oldest F91ºÚÁÏÍø was a colleague in his early 80's – and being there with their family witnessing this special moment was a truly emotional experience. The meeting offered again an impressive opportunity to reconnect, recharge, learn, and come back with a renovated spirit and sense of purpose.
Then we had Leadership Day on Capitol Hill, which proved to be a lifetime experience for many of our medical students and residents who eloquently discussed the agenda items with our Congress representatives and their Staff. I was very excited to witness the genuine engagement, passion, and commitment to representing our Ohio members, as well as to support the mission to enhance access to care for our patients. It is very important that our youngest members embrace the mission of the College, which absolutely transcends beyond Internal Medicine – ensuring that our colleagues have success and growth as physicians minimizing administrative burdens to practice, as well as ensuring that our patients receive the best possible medical care. I am hopeful that this experience will allow our young colleagues to continue being the best advocates for Medicine, and I can't stop expressing my gratitude for their engagement.
Continuing the gratitude pathway, on July 1 we must submit the nominations for Masters, as well as national awards in the 91ºÚÁÏÍø; the opportunity to submit nominations for local chapters awards should also be considered. I am eloquently typing some letters for colleagues who are very well-deserving of recognition and gratitude. What does it cost me? First, nothing. I must be thoughtful to carefully consider the colleagues who have done tremendous contributions to our chapter and the College, but also who have impacted in the legacy of our new generations of physicians. I must express that when writing these letters, reading their resumes, and talking to other colleagues who also consider these nominations, it gives me profound satisfaction and emotion. It is so humbling to witness so much greatness paired with tremendous humility. We are surrounded by impressive people who leave a very positive influence and mark in the lives of others; people who create and revamp the way Medicine is taught and practiced, developing new curriculum and who mentor the new generations of educators; people who innovate and engage in transforming healthcare, making it more affordable, with enhanced ease to access, and who leverages technology to create a more efficient process for overall healthcare delivery; people who are clinical geniuses and way ahead of their time, who have been key stakeholders in the implementation of evidence-based medicine and excellence in high-value care, along with being the best proponents of clinical reasoning and diagnostic excellence. And I could keep going. An important aspect is that we MUST recognize others. To me, this is a KEY element to fight burnout. Recognition is humbling, but also offers a breath of fresh air – it makes people reflect on what they have done, be proud of their work, and reset. It also allows the people's families to enjoy and share the pride and satisfaction. Please stop for a second and think of whom you can recognize. Our chapter awards are very valuable, and the recognition to our peers is truly a no cost effort – of course, you must be creative to get their resumes without them being aware, and to secure nominators, and certainly, write the letter – but overall, it has no financial impact on you. It cost nothing financially to nominate colleagues for an award, but the emotional return on investment is simply enormous. The feeling of satisfaction when you see your colleagues be surprised, excited, and humbled with the recognition is unparalleled, with this satisfaction heightened even more, when you witness the pride by the family members who come to the award ceremony. And that emotional return on investment keeps me happy, humble, satisfied, and renews my energy.
I wish you all a very happy Summer in the company of your loved ones. See you soon in our annual meeting in the Fall.
With enormous gratitude and respect,
Moises Auron

Leadership Day 2024
This past May 14 and 15, 2024, Ohio had a robust participation at the Leadership Day 2024, the American College of Physicians' (91ºÚÁÏÍø) annual two-day advocacy event held in Washington, D.C. that enables 91ºÚÁÏÍø to increase its presence on Capitol Hill and strengthen the voice of the internal medicine community in discussing issues of interest and concern with U.S. lawmakers.
This year Leadership Day priorities focused on advocating for legislation to reduce administrative burden on physicians, support physician payment, improve access to care for patients, strengthen the physician workforce and reduce the burden of student debt.
We had a robust delegation of 15 trainees and 4 attending physicians lead by our 91ºÚÁÏÍø OH Healthcare and Public Policy Committee leaders, Dr. Houman Varghai, Dr. Ellen Gelles and Dr. Mehool Patel, and the 91ºÚÁÏÍø OH Governor, Dr. Moises Auron. Our trainees represented schools and institutions across all the state.
We look forward with excitement to have you be in our delegation in 2025.
