(August 2024) Members of Congress are returning home to their districts during the August congressional recess. During this time, 91 is calling on internal medicine physicians to engage their representatives on important issues we need Congress to act on before the end of 2024.
To incentivize participation in this grassroots mobilization, the Advocates for Internal Medicine Network (91 grassroots network) is challenging members to see which states will have the highest engagement. Advocates can score points for their states by choosing to take one or more advocacy actions identified in the campaign.

(May 2024) Your 91 Chapter thanks you for your continued Membership and all you do every day to serve your patients and support the future of internal medicine. We’re proud that you’ve chosen us as your professional home, and we’re committed to remaining by your side—advocating for and supporting your professional journey.
Advocacy Through a Student's Lens
Sarah Neault is a second-year medical student at Morehouse School of Medicine and the incoming Chair of the GA Chapter's Student Council.
(May 2024) When the Georgia chapter leaders visited my school for a lunch lecture about student opportunities with the 91 this past fall, we were told by the Governor, Dr. Watkins, that regardless of our experience level, we would be equipped with everything we needed to speak up on issues and be placed “front and center” before lawmakers at advocacy events. As someone who was passionate about many healthcare issues but feeling powerless against them, I decided to take him up on that offer.
A couple of months later, three of my classmates and I found ourselves in a room full of doctors, residents, and students from all over Georgia. We were learning about key issues and legislation, preparing to speak to our own state legislators, and hearing briefings from important state lawmakers. Acronyms were thrown around that we had never heard before. To this day, I still don’t fully understand what a pharmacy benefit manager is. It was easy to feel overwhelmed, until one lobbyist disclosed that some state lawmakers don’t know the difference between Medicare and Medicaid. As shocking as this was to hear, it put me at ease and gave me a sense of clarity. Although I have yet to practice medicine, negotiate with insurance as a provider, or learn all the fancy acronyms, I know that I’m about to step into a mess of a healthcare system and my representatives need to be listening to organizations like the 91 if we ever want it to improve.
Following the advocacy day at the state capitol, I took on the role of student council chair for the chapter and was invited to attend 91’s Leadership Day in Washington, D.C. with the Georgia delegation. I had the opportunity to be “front and center” in the offices of our federal legislators, backed up by a room full of highly knowledgeable and passionate physician leaders. This experience provided me with a new set of mentors and invaluable connections, a long list of new acronyms (special thanks to the residents for helping me decipher them), and most importantly, a window into what my own future could look like as an advocate for both patients and the physicians who make tireless sacrifices on their behalf.

Georgia Chapter Receives the 2023 John Tooker Evergreen Award
(May 2023) The John Tooker Evergreen Awards Program provides recognition and visibility to chapters that have successfully implemented programs to increase membership, improve communication, encourage member involvement, enhance diversity, foster careers in internal medicine or improve chapter management. The Georgia Chapter received the 2023John Tooker Evergreen Award for their initiative, Heart Sounds Workshop.
Heart Sounds Workshop
One of the primary lessons learned is to allow students to identify their own interests and needs. When those needs/interest are presented to a Chapter, the Chapters can work with the student IMIGs to best determine how to meet the student needs in a way and time to capitalize on the events for the benefits of the students and the Chapter.
The Georgia Chapter's Medical Student Committee planned to increase visibility of 91 among medical students through two-hour heart sound workshops delivered to Internal Medicine Interest Groups (IMIGs) at various Georgian campuses. In total, the sessions were conducted at five medical school campuses in more remote/rural locations and had 146 attendees. The Chapter targeted medical school campuses in more remote/rural to address the College’s (and one of the Georgia Chapter’s) strategic goals to develop more diversity, equity, and inclusion in learning opportunities and engagement with chapter activities.
Chapter Members Elected to 91 Fellowship
(March 2023) We would like to congratulate our chapter members on election to Fellow of the American College of Physicians. The distinction recognizes achievements in internal medicine.

Call for Fall 2023 Resolutions
(February 2023) Are you concerned about a practice or clinical issue or have an idea you'd like to suggest? If so, you might consider submitting a resolution to your Governor or chapter council.
Initiating a resolution provides 91 members an opportunity to focus attention at the 91 national level on a particular issue or topic that concerns them. Participating in the Board of Governors resolutions process provides the 91 grassroots member a voice and allows you to shape College policy that impacts the practice of internal medicine.
Not sure how to begin drafting a resolution? Researching the College's position on an issue can give you a start. The just released 91 Board of Governors Resolutions Guide for 91 Members is now available to download and will help, too. The Guide was created to provide members a short overview of the resolutions process essentials and highlights critical 91 online resources you must use.
Once drafted, members must submit resolutions to their Governor and/or chapter council. Chapter council approval to move resolutions forward to 91 national is required. A resolution becomes a resolution of the chapter once the chapter council approves forwarding it to national. If effecting change interests you, the deadline for submitting new resolutions to be heard at the Fall 2023 Board of Governors Meeting is March 30, 2023.
Share your good idea with us. Draft a resolution.
