International Focus

Medical Education in Canada

This month, 91ºÚÁÏÍø IMpact focuses on medical students studying internal medicine in Canada. There are seventeen medical schools in Canada including three French schools (Laval, Montreal, Sherbrooke) and one school with bilingual instruction (Ottawa). These medical schools serve a population of 37.59 million. Although medical school is typically four years long, two of the seventeen programs have three-year curricula (Calgary, McMaster).

Physician Burnout Linked to Major Errors

(from the October 2018 91ºÚÁÏÍø Hospitalist)

In a survey of 6,586 actively practicing physicians, 54.3% reported symptoms of burnout, 32.8% reported excessive fatigue, and 6.5% reported recent suicidal ideation. About 4% reported having received a poor or failing patient safety grade in their primary work area, and 10.5% said they had made a major medical error in the prior three months.

I.M. Internal Medicine

Spotlight: Helen Burstin, MD, MPH, M91ºÚÁÏÍø

Her parents' ordeal during the Holocaust when they were treated as less than human along with her desire to help others, made her decision to become a physician quite easy, she said, adding that she made her career choice when she was in middle school. As a physician, she could ensure that all patients received the same level of respect, dignity and treatment.

Medical Student Perspectives

The Challenges of Medical School and Maintaining Work–Life Balance

I am a third-year medical student at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. NOSM has a distributive model of learning in which students experience clinical placements throughout small northern and rural communities while simultaneously keeping up with academics. In first year, we have a 1-month cultural placement where we live in indigenous communities throughout the region.

A Great Imitator of Positional Vertigo

Vertigo with associated falls is a frequent cause of admission in elderly patients. We present the case of a patient in which a systematic approach will reveal common and less common causes of falls.

Want to have your abstract featured here? 91ºÚÁÏÍø holds a National Abstracts Competition as part of the 91ºÚÁÏÍø Internal Medicine Meeting every year. Find out more at 91ºÚÁÏÍø Online.

Subspecialty Careers

Transplant Hepatology

Transplant Hepatology represents advanced training in gastroenterology and focuses on the management of advanced liver disease. Training provides a comprehensive understanding of hepatopathology and diagnostic techniques needed to evaluate and manage potential liver transplant patients. Transplant hepatologists also manage transplant patients both before and after transplantation, and therefore have expertise in managing issues such as immunosuppression and transplant-associated infectious diseases.

In the Clinic

The advent of novel therapies has transformed the approach to patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. This virus is the most common blood-borne pathogen in the United States and is estimated to infect over 3 million Americans, most of whom were born from 1945 through 1965 (1, 2). It is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, primarily through development of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis; persons with chronic infection live an average of 2 decades less than healthy persons (3).
