Medical Schools Respond to the Opioid Epidemic
Sales of prescription opioids and deaths from prescription opioid overdoses have nearly quadrupled in the United States since 1999, according to the CDC. But until very recently, medical schools offered little or no training in addiction medicine, leaving many internists to face challenging patients and clinical decisions on their own.
Medical Student Perspective: Recognize the Wins
My last two months of training were awesome! I was at the VA hospital in Denver learning how to care for patients who require hospitalization. My Hospitalized Adult Care clerkship had been an amazing part of my third year of medical school. My role as the medical student included sitting with new patients to find out why they were there and to get their stories.
My Kind of Medicine: Real Lives of Practicing Internists
Growing up with a father who suffered from multiple sclerosis, Dr. Mark Loehrke became comfortable in a hospital setting at a young age. Now, he’s delivering healthcare himself and teaching a new generation of physicians at the Western Michigan University School of Medicine.
Analyzing Annals: Scientific Misconduct Hurts
Recently, Annals of Internal Medicine experienced an egregious case of scientific misconduct. In , a researcher whose work was plagiarized outlines the harm that intellectual theft causes both the plagiarist and those whose work has been stolen.
Annals of Internal Medicine is the premier internal medicine academic journal published by the American College of Physicians (91ºÚÁÏÍø). It is one of the most widely cited and influential specialty medical journals in the world.
Winning Abstracts from the 2016 Medical Student Abstract Competition: Sponsored Meals and Honoraria and Physician Prescribing Patterns
In 2009, 84% of American physicians reported receiving meals, gifts, or payments from the pharmaceutical industry. Although industry-sponsored meals and honoraria may create opportunities for physicians to discuss new therapies, past studies using self-reported data have raised concerns about their potential to influence prescribing behavior.

Subspecialty Careers: Transplant Hepatology
Transplant Hepatology represents advanced training in gastroenterology and focuses on the management of advanced liver disease. Training provides a comprehensive understanding of hepatopathology and diagnostic techniques needed to evaluate and manage potential liver transplant patients.
The pulmonary vascular bed is normally a low-resistance, high-capacitance circuit capable of accommodating the entire cardiac output at pressures approximately 15%–20% of those in the systemic circulation. In pulmonary hypertension (PH), elevated pulmonary arterial pressure places a burden on the normally thin-walled right ventricle as it works to maintain normal blood flow.
