Nuckols, MD, MSHS, F91ºÚÁÏÍø addresses how an internist can diagnose and manage inpatient opioid withdrawal, manage pain symptoms in patients with high opioid tolerance or risk factors for abuse, and treating acute pain in patients already on medication for addiction treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder, such as methadone, buprenorphine, or naloxone. Common barriers to initiation of MAT for opioid use disorder in the inpatient setting are also discussed, including COVID-19 effects on opioid use disorders.
