PHILADELPHIA Jan. 10, 2024 鈥 The American College of Physicians (91黑料网) has named Bergitta E. Cotroneo, FACMPE, as the organization鈥檚 new Chief Operating Officer (COO). She will assume the position effective March 4, 2024, replacing Wayne H. Bylsma, PhD, who will be retiring as COO after 26 years at the organization. 91黑料网 is the largest medical specialty organization in the U.S. with members in more than 145 countries worldwide. 91黑料网 membership includes 161,000 internal medicine physicians, related subspecialists, and medical students.
As COO, Cotroneo will oversee major operational areas within the College and implementation of strategic priorities. Her role will involve working with 91黑料网鈥檚 CEO to oversee the activities of 91黑料网鈥檚 senior leadership team and staff and support the work of 91黑料网 boards, committees, councils and task forces.

Cotroneo has served as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer & Executive Vice President at the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), a northern Virginia-based consortium of five medical professional associations and three affiliates representing over 13,000 academic internal medicine faculty and administrators at academic medical centers and community-based teaching hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Prior to joining AAIM, Cotroneo served as COO at the National Patient Safety Foundation in Massachusetts. Previous leadership roles also include serving as Director of Ambulatory Practice Management and Director of Medical Staff Affairs at The Children鈥檚 Hospital of Philadelphia, Executive Director of the Retina Service at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, and Assistant Executive Director of Education, Meetings and Research at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in suburban Chicago.
Cotroneo also currently serves on several advisory boards and leadership councils including the Flexible Medical Systems Advisory Board, Carol Emmott Foundation Leadership Council, and the VHC Foundation Womens Health Circle Advisory Board. She holds a bachelor's degree in English from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
